Coco Gauff reportedly forgot to bring her rackets to the court but demonstrated her French Open title ambitions with a convincing first-round victory. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev was unable to progress beyond the first round amid wet and windy conditions on Tuesday.
It was said that three-time champion Novak Djokovic managed to overcome difficult weather to start his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title with a win. Last year’s finalist Alexander Zverev was also noted to have begun his campaign strongly as he pursued his first major trophy.
Before her match, Gauff, who was the tournament’s second seed, apparently smiled sheepishly and showed her empty bag to her team, who quickly fetched her rackets. She then comfortably defeated Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-2. Gauff was quoted as saying that the most important thing was to play with a racket, and she joked on social media that she had forgotten to pack her tennis rackets.
She added that the incident probably helped her relax before the match because it was so funny, and expressed relief at winning, promising to remember her rackets next time.
Despite the delayed start on Court Philippe Chatrier, Gauff was reported to have taken control of the match by winning the first three games and closing out the opening set with a determined hold after losing her serve earlier.
