American third seed Coco Gauff is through to the fourth round of the US Open after beating Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday. The win was a big boost for Gauff, who had struggled in her earlier matches.
She made many mistakes in her opening game and had a tough, emotional second-round match, but this time she looked much more confident and focused.
“It’s been an emotional week,” Gauff said. “I think I needed those tough matches to help me move forward. I was putting too much pressure on myself.”
After a slow start, Gauff broke Frech’s serve in the eighth game of the first set and won it when Frech hit the ball out. In the second set, Gauff won a long 20-shot rally to get an early break, then broke again without losing a point.
She played strongly from the baseline and thanked her fans after sealing the win.
“Today showed I was really enjoying myself out there,” said Gauff, who has now reached the last 16 at the US Open for the fourth year in a row. “The support means a lot.”
In the next round, she will face either Australia’s Daria Kasatkina or two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka from Japan.
