Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will face off in Saturday’s semi-finals at the Wuhan Open after both secured comfortable straight-set victories in the quarter-finals.
World No. 1 Sabalenka and No. 4-ranked Gauff will compete for a spot in Sunday’s final, where the winner will meet either Wang Xinyu or Qinwen Zheng. Gauff notched her eighth consecutive WTA win and 50th of the year, defeating Poland’s Magda Linette 6-0, 6-4.
The 20-year-old American aims for back-to-back tournament titles after her victory at last week’s China Open in Beijing. Despite winning the first set without dropping a game, Gauff had to fend off four break points on her serve, showcasing her strong returns at key moments.
“I’m really happy with how I played,” Gauff said, acknowledging the challenge posed by her eight double faults. “It was a smooth first set. I had chances to close it out at 5-3 in the second, but I’m glad I finished it on my serve.”
Sabalenka advanced to her third consecutive Wuhan semi-final by defeating Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-2 in a one-sided match, delivering 42 winners.
The 26-year-old previously won the tournament in 2018 and 2019 before it was paused for five years due to the pandemic. Gauff leads their head-to-head 4-3, including a memorable victory in the 2023 US Open final, though Sabalenka avenged that loss in this year’s Australian Open semis. “We’ve had many great battles in the past, and I’m really excited,” Sabalenka said.

While the Sabalenka-Gauff match will attract global attention, local fans will also focus on the all-Chinese semi-final.
Wang Xinyu came back from a set down to defeat world No. 33 Ekaterina Alexandrova 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), while fifth seed Qinwen Zheng joined her in the last four with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Italian third seed Jasmine Paolini.
