In Albufiera, Portugal, the European Men’s Snooker Masters Individual Championship began on Thursday. The Maltese players achieved impressive results, with two convincing 3-0 victories and two identical 3-1 defeats.
The experienced Maltese player, Alex Borg, was initially scheduled to face the Austrian player, Bernhard Wallner. However, Wallner withdrew from the competition. Nonetheless, Borg went on to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory against Hungarian player Balázs Csurgó. The frame scores were 75-11, 68-46, and 82-42.
Philip Ciantar also had a dominant performance in his first game, securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Francisco Rodriguez from Spain. Ciantar left little opportunity for his opponent to accumulate points, winning all three frames with scores of 60-38, 65-15, and 67-12.
The other two Maltese players who competed on the first day were Arthur Cachia and David Zammit. Cachia suffered a 3-1 loss against French player Jérôme Chatet, while Zammit faced former English professional player Craig Steadman. Zammit also lost with a score of 3-1. It is worth noting that Steadman had previously reached the final of the Men’s European Individual Championship in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina this year, after defeating Maltese player Brian Cini in the semi-final.
