Sampdoria in crisis: Evani to replace Semplici, Mancini offers support

Sampdoria finds itself on the brink of collapse following a crushing defeat in the La Spezia derby, a loss that edges the once proud club dangerously close to relegation to Serie C. With just six games remaining in the season, tensions have boiled over both on and off the pitch, leaving the club in turmoil.

After the defeat, the team’s bus was reportedly stranded for hours outside the Stadio Alberto Picco under heavy police presence, as tensions escalated among the fans. In Bogliasco, the situation was just as volatile, with angry supporters leaving threatening messages directed at both the players and management. The atmosphere was so intense that the club opted to go straight into a training retreat, avoiding a return to Genoa and instead focusing on preparing for their crucial upcoming match against Cittadella at Marassi.

The poor run of form has proven fatal for coach Leonardo Semplici, whose tenure is now effectively over after collecting only 15 points from 16 games, managing just two wins, nine draws, and five defeats. His successor is expected to be Alberico Evani.

Evani has reportedly already given his availability to take over, aiming to steer the club out of this desperate situation. His return is backed by none other than Roberto Mancini, a club legend and former Italy and Saudi Arabia national team coach. Mancini, who had been linked with Juventus before Igor Tudor’s appointment, was contacted by Sampdoria president Matteo Manfredi to discuss the club’s crisis.

While Mancini has ruled out a direct return to the bench, he has expressed a strong emotional attachment to the club and his willingness to help in a more strategic capacity. Talks are ongoing about the possibility of Mancini joining as an external advisor or even taking a more hands-on role within the club’s technical area in the future.

For Mancini, Sampdoria is more than just a club, it’s personal. His affection for the team was made clear in a heartfelt message sent to a private chat with former teammates from the club’s iconic 1990–91 Scudetto-winning side, including Lanna, Invernizzi, Lombardo, Vierchowod, Salsano, Pagliuca, and Cerezo:
“I always follow Samp. I’m really sorry and very worried. I truly hope they manage to stay up.”

While fans may have briefly dreamed of Mancini’s sensational return to the touchline, for now, the reality is a more pragmatic one: the immediate priority is to bring back Iachini in hopes of pulling off a near miracle to keep the club in Serie B.

Sampdoria’s future hangs in the balance, and its survival now rests on experience, unity, and a last push for redemption.
