Filippo Inzaghi has left Pisa just weeks after leading the team to a historic promotion to Serie A, the club announced on Friday.
In a statement, Pisa said that Inzaghi’s contract, which still had two years remaining, was ended by mutual agreement.
The 51-year-old, who previously played for Italy, AC Milan, and Juventus, is expected to remain in Serie B by joining Palermo.
According to Italian media, Palermo have paid Pisa nearly one million euros to secure Inzaghi’s services. Palermo, owned by the City Football Group (which also owns Manchester City), are aiming to return to Serie A.
Under Inzaghi, Pisa finished second in Serie B and returned to Italy’s top division for the first time in 34 years. They were promoted alongside Sassuolo and Cremonese.
Pisa’s Arena Garibaldi stadium is located near the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Alberto Gilardino, a fellow 2006 World Cup winner, is among the possible replacements for Inzaghi, along with Marco Giampaolo, who was recently dismissed by Lecce.
