Southampton Football Club has confirmed the departure of manager Ivan Juric just one day after the team’s relegation from the Premier League was mathematically sealed. The decision follows a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, which cemented the Saints’ drop from England’s top flight with seven games remaining, a record for earliest relegation in Premier League history.
Juric, who took charge in December 2024 on an 18 month contract, struggled to turn the club’s fortunes around. Under his leadership, Southampton managed just two wins in 16 matches, a disappointing run that ultimately led to the club’s swift decline to the Championship.
In a statement, the club thanked Juric for his efforts during a difficult period and confirmed that first team coach Simon Rusk will take over on an interim basis. Rusk will be assisted by Adam Lallana, the veteran midfielder who returned to Southampton in January and is now transitioning into a coaching role.
Southampton’s board has already begun the search for a new permanent manager with an emphasis on rebuilding the squad and mounting a strong push for promotion next season. The club also faces questions about its long term strategy, player retention, and leadership as it prepares for life outside the Premier League.
Juric’s departure marks the latest in a series of managerial changes at the club, which has struggled for consistency both on and off the pitch in recent seasons. The Croatian coach, known for his tactical intelligence and previous success in Serie A, was brought in with hopes of stabilising the squad but was unable to deliver results amid a turbulent campaign.
Southampton now turns its focus to restructuring and recovery, aiming to bounce back quickly from what has been a historically difficult season.
