The Malta National Senior Men’s Water Polo Team began their final phase of preparations for the European Aquatics Water Polo Championships Men 2026 with an impressive 22–12 victory over Slovenia in their first friendly match of the training camp.
The encounter, played in Slovenia, marked Malta’s first competitive test during what is the final training camp ahead of the European Championships, which will be held in Belgrade, Serbia, from 10 to 25 January 2026.
Malta did not enjoy the best of starts, falling 3–0 behind in the opening stages of the first quarter as the hosts took advantage of early momentum. However, the Maltese side reacted well, showing composure and resilience to recover and level the score at 5–5 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter proved more balanced, with Malta gradually gaining the upper hand. Improved defensive organisation and sharper execution in attack saw the national side edge in front, turning the score to 8–7 in their favour by the second quarter.
Malta took full control after the second quarter, delivering a dominant third-quarter performance. With increased intensity, the Maltese side pulled clear, extending their advantage to 15–10 and firmly asserting control of the match.
The final quarter underlined Malta’s growing authority, as they continued to stretch the scoreline with confidence and efficiency, eventually sealing a comprehensive 22–12 victory over the Slovenian national team.
This training camp in Slovenia represents the final stage of Malta’s preparations before the European Aquatics Water Polo Championships, where the national side will compete against Europe’s elite in Belgrade.
