Schouten to gold: The Dutchwoman broke the 20-year-old Olympic record

Dutchwoman Irene Schouten won a gold medal today in the 3,000-meter speed skating at the Beijing Winter Olympics, breaking a 20-year-old Olympic record.

Schouten reached gold with a time of three minutes and 56.93 seconds.

Thus breaking the record held by Claudia Pechstein of Germany since the Salt Lake City Games in 2002.

The 29-year-old Dutchwoman won her second Olympic medal, the first gold.

The silver medal was won by the Italian Francesca Lollobrigida (3: 58.06), while the bronze went to the Canadian Isabelle Weidemann (3: 58.64).
