Gżira United have claimed the VMFA Cisk Premier League title following a commanding victory over Birkirkara St Helen’s, securing their position at the summit and ending the title hopes of nearest challengers Floriana.
Going into the final round of fixtures, Floriana remained in contention and delivered a resounding 5-2 win over MFPA, keeping their ambitions alive. However, their fate rested on Gżira slipping up. The Maroons, determined to control their destiny, made sure that would not happen.
From the outset, Gżira set the tone. Kurt Magro opened the scoring early, beating Birkirkara goalkeeper Anthony Micallef to give his side an early lead. Arthur Oyama extended the advantage in the 22nd minute with a perfectly placed free kick, giving Gżira a 2-0 cushion at half-time.
Birkirkara briefly threatened a comeback after the restart when Luke Satariano reduced the deficit. But Gżira reacted immediately, with Magro scoring his second of the night to re-establish the two-goal margin. Andrew Xuereb then added a fourth to put the result beyond doubt and confirm Gżira’s status as league champions.
At the final whistle, Veterans Malta Football Association President Malcolm Camilleri presented the trophy to Gżira captain Jonathan Pearson, officially marking the club’s triumph.
Despite their impressive showing, Floriana’s hopes ended in disappointment. Glenn Bonello scored twice in their victory over MFPA, with Donovan Friggieri and Trevor Cilia also on the scoresheet. MFPA’s response came through a brace by Thomas Paris, but the result was not enough to impact the title race.
Floriana ultimately finished one point adrift, while Gżira celebrated a season that ended in glory.
