Tensions boiled over in what was meant to be a thrilling water polo encounter between Sliema ASC and Neptunes, but the aftermath of the match has been overshadowed by an incident involving Sliema player Jamie Gambin, who made an inappropriate remark towards Neptunes’ Alec Fenech.
The confrontation, which unfolded during a heated and hard-fought match, quickly gained traction after videos circulated on social media showing a verbal exchange between the two athletes after the match. The incident has prompted widespread concern within the Maltese aquatic sports community, with many calling for accountability and stronger safeguards against unsportsmanlike behaviour.
In response, Sliema ASC released an official club statement acknowledging the incident and expressing remorse. The club reaffirmed its commitment to core values such as respect, inclusiveness, and integrity, adding that these standards must apply to players, staff, and supporters alike.
“Regardless of intent or emotion in the heat of the moment, such comments have no place in sport—or in society,” the statement read. The club confirmed that it has spoken directly with Gambin, who is reported to be remorseful and fully aware of the seriousness of his actions. Sliema have also confirmed in their statement that disciplinary action shall be taken, with the club noting that the process is focused not only on accountability but also on helping the player grow from the experience.
“To the player affected, to his family, and to the wider community: on behalf of Sliema ASC, we extend our sincerest apologies,” the club added.
The incident has also drawn a strong reaction from the Aquatic Sports Association (ASA). ASA President Karl Izzo condemned the behaviour and confirmed to various sources that a report has already been submitted by the ASA Executive.
Izzo’s actions reflect a growing concern over standards of conduct in the sport, and the ASA is expected to follow through with its investigation and potential disciplinary measures in the coming days.
While the result of the match itself saw Sliema emerge victorious, the lasting image is unfortunately that of a confrontation which has no place in sport. As the ASA and the clubs involved move forward, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respect, accountability, and the values that must remain at the heart of Maltese aquatic sport.
