Maltese triathletes Kai Azzopardi and Ryan Muscat produced outstanding performances at the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals held last weekend in Wollongong, Australia, representing Malta with determination and skill on the global stage.
For Kai Azzopardi, the event marked a major milestone in his career as he competed in the World Junior Championship, having earned his spot through a series of strong international results earlier in the season. Facing some of the most promising young triathletes in the world, Azzopardi handled the challenging conditions well, completing a solid swim in choppy waters before transitioning to the bike segment in one of the leading groups.

Despite losing contact with the front pack during the 20km cycle due to strong crosswinds, Azzopardi maintained focus, riding solo for much of the course and regaining ground during the final 5km run. He eventually crossed the line in 54th place out of 62 athletes, an encouraging result given the calibre of the competition and difficult racing conditions.
In the 16–19 Age Group Championship, Ryan Muscat delivered one of the best performances of his young career. He emerged from the swim in 5th position out of 77 athletes, stayed with the lead pack during the bike section, and capped off the race with a powerful run to secure an impressive 6th place overall. Speaking after the event, Muscat described the race as “fast and furious,” adding that he “enjoyed every second of it.”
Malta Triathlon Federation General Secretary Warren Muscat, who was present in Wollongong alongside Edith Degabriele, acting as Technical Delegate and Technical Official respectively, praised both athletes for their determination and professionalism.

“It is a privilege and a proud moment to witness our juniors competing against the best in the world and managing to challenge them,” Muscat said. “Every triathlon enthusiast and sportsperson on the island should take pride in this achievement. We have proven that the development pathway the Malta Triathlon Federation has worked so hard to build is bearing fruit, and we are confident that Kai and Ryan are just the beginning of a long and successful story for Maltese triathlon.”
He also expressed gratitude to the Malta Triathlon Federation Executive, local clubs, and coaches for their continued commitment, and to SportMalta and the Maltese Olympic Committee for their support in making such international participation possible.
Ljudmila Medan, member of the European Triathlon Development Commission, also congratulated the Maltese athletes, describing their results as “one of the biggest achievements in Maltese triathlon.” She commended both competitors and the federation for their “hard work from both the administrative and technical sides.”
The strong performances by Azzopardi and Muscat underline the rapid growth of triathlon in Malta and highlight the success of the federation’s youth development strategy as Maltese athletes continue to make their mark on the international stage.
