Calls grow for action as regatta rowers face daily safety risks in Grand Harbour

Frustration and anger are mounting within Malta’s rowing community as ongoing issues surrounding the safety of national regatta training in Grand Harbour remain unresolved. Concerns have intensified following a strongly worded statement made on the popular Facebook page Ir-Regatta f’Malta, which accused the authorities of ignoring repeated breaches of maritime safety regulations during training sessions.

According to the statement, Transport Malta has failed to adequately enforce speed limits within the port, allowing tourist boats, speedboats and commercial vessels to enter the area without regard for the safety of the athletes. These breaches are not only disrupting training but are also placing the lives of the rowers and young coxswains at serious risk. The post emphasised that these incidents are occurring regularly, and the lack of concrete action or accountability is unacceptable.

The administrator of the page, who is also a prominent figure in the rowing community, expressed deep frustration at what he described as a total lack of common sense. “It is obvious that anyone who owns a boat or works on a vessel should immediately slow down when they see national-level rowers training. This should not require enforcement. It is a matter of basic respect and safety.”

He added that the regatta is not just a sport but an important part of Malta’s cultural heritage, passed down through generations and cherished by communities across the islands. “We need to protect this tradition, not expose it to daily threats and negligence. The authorities have a responsibility to safeguard the sport and the people who dedicate their lives to it.”

There are growing calls for immediate intervention. The rowing community is urging Transport Malta to increase its visible presence during training times and to strictly enforce existing speed regulations within Grand Harbour. Education campaigns have also been suggested to remind boat owners and operators of their obligations when passing through zones used for sporting activities.

As the issue continues to escalate, many in the community are no longer willing to remain silent. They are demanding action now before a serious accident takes place. For them, the regatta is not only a source of local pride but also a national legacy that deserves the utmost respect and protection.
