Bormla Regatta Club are viewing the upcoming Freedom Day Regatta as a period of transition, but still believe they can emerge as dark horses behind the stronger Cottonera contenders Senglea and Birgu.
Speaking to Malta Sport, club secretary Darren Scicluna said Bormla are not entering the regatta as clear favourites, especially after a successful cycle that naturally led to a rebuilding phase. However, he insisted the club still believes it can challenge in several races and possibly produce some surprises.
Scicluna explained that Bormla have introduced changes in several crews, with younger rowers being allowed to step up, while continuity in other categories, particularly in the women’s section, could help the club remain competitive.
He also referred to the departure of Dennis Thornton, describing him as an icon of the regatta and a major figure in Bormla’s past successes. While acknowledging that his loss is significant, Scicluna said the club respects Thornton’s decision and is now focused on looking ahead.

Malta Sport also spoke to Bormla rower Maximillian Mamo, who said the team is currently in the peak of its preparations ahead of Freedom Day. He added that, despite not having been at the top in the last two years, the squad remains fully committed and determined to give everything on race day.
Bormla’s last regatta triumph came in 2023, and while the club is approaching this edition with realism, there is still belief within the camp that they can leave their mark and challenge the established favourites.
