One of Malta’s most decorated rowers, Dennis Thornton, is set to join Birgu Regatta Club after more than 20 years of competing under the colours of Bormla and Marsa alongside long-time teammate Clive Casha.
Thornton, who has been part of several record-breaking victories for Bormla, will now cross over to their historic rivals, Birgu, ahead of the next Regatta. The move is already being described as one of the most significant transfers in recent memory, given the fierce competition between the two Grand Harbour clubs.
During his career with Bormla, Thornton built a formidable partnership with Casha, contributing to countless wins that cemented the club’s dominance over the past two decades. His experience and pedigree are expected to provide a major boost to Birgu’s challenge in the upcoming Freedom Day and Victory Day regattas.
For Bormla, the departure marks the end of an era, while for Birgu, it represents a statement of intent as they aim to close the gap on their rivals.
