The Maltese Olympic Committee hosted the 45th European Olympic Committees (EOC) Seminar and Olympic Solidarity Forum last week, bringing together National Olympic Committees (NOCs) from across Europe for an innovative exchange of ideas, collaboration, and practical knowledge-sharing.
This year’s edition, held in partnership with Olympic Solidarity, reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthening sport and supporting athletes through strategic programmes designed to enhance development, governance, and sustainability.
The two-day programme featured six workshops addressing key themes, including governance, athlete voice and integrity, sustainable development, digital communications, and the enhancement of NOC operations through innovation.
Malta’s selection as the host nation was confirmed in September 2024, marking a milestone that reflects the country’s enduring dedication to the Olympic Movement and its proven capacity to organise major international sporting events.
Opening the seminar, Maltese Olympic Committee president Julian Pace Bonello expressed pride in Malta’s opportunity to stage such an important event.
“Malta is honoured to host the 45th European Olympic Committees Seminar and Olympic Solidarity Forum,” he said. “This gathering is not only about sharing best practices, but also about shaping the future of sport – ensuring it continues to inspire, unite and empower young people across borders and generations. We look forward to meaningful dialogue, new friendships, and shared resolve.”
Also present at the opening was the European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Culture, Youth and Sport, Glenn Micallef, who reflected on the unifying nature of sport.
“Sport in Europe is more than competition. It is a community. It is fairness. It is an opportunity,” he said. “European sport must remain close to citizens, rooted in our clubs, our local communities, and our grassroots programmes.”
EOC president Spyros Capralos, who chaired an Executive Committee meeting on the eve of the seminar, highlighted the purpose and spirit of the event.
“The EOC Seminar has always been more than just a meeting on the calendar,” he noted. “It is a moment for our Family to step outside the formalities of the General Assembly and engage in open, constructive dialogue, creating the right environment for NOCs to exchange experiences, share knowledge, and return home with practical insights that will strengthen their daily work.”
Over the years, Malta has earned a strong reputation as a reliable host for major international events, having successfully staged the Games of the Small States of Europe in 1993, 2003, and 2023.
Hosting the 45th EOC Seminar and Olympic Solidarity Forum continues this tradition, further positioning Malta as a hub for dialogue, collaboration, and the promotion of Olympic values.
In a statement, the Maltese Olympic Committee expressed its gratitude to SportMalta for its financial support through the Sports Tourism Scheme.
