Gattuso says atmosphere ahead of Israel Match is challenging

Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso addressed the media at Coverciano ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Estonia (October 11) and Israel (October 14), acknowledging both the pressure surrounding the fixtures and the complex external climate.

Italy currently sit second in Group I, with limited chances of overtaking leaders Norway, but Gattuso underlined the importance of maintaining focus and determination.

Against Estonia, we have everything to lose. It will be a tough match that requires concentration and respect for the opponent,” he said. “The game against Israel will also be played in a difficult atmosphere, with few fans expected in Udine due to the current situation. We understand the concerns, but our objective is clear: we must qualify for the World Cup.”

The Italy coach also spoke about the broader challenges beyond the pitch, noting the tension surrounding the match against Israel. “It’s not a serene environment. There will be more people outside than inside the stadium. We’re aware of the circumstances, but we must stay focused and do our duty.”

Gattuso confirmed that Federico Chiesa was not called up after discussions between the player and coach, explaining that the winger did not yet feel fully fit. He reiterated that this was part of his consistent approach: “There’s no issue, we respect the player’s feelings.”

During the press conference, Gattuso touched on several other squad matters, expressing appreciation for Leonardo Spinazzola’s commitment after being called up late, and showing confidence in Samuele Ricci’s potential despite his limited playing time at club level.

He also praised the attitude of his group, emphasising the importance of collective growth and adaptability over individual concerns. “We have to continue improving, sense danger better, and never take anything for granted,” he said.

Looking ahead to the double-header, Gattuso highlighted that tactical flexibility will be key, acknowledging that he is ready to adapt formations as required by the circumstances.

The coach also commented light-heartedly on Fabio Cannavaro’s recent qualification for the World Cup with Uzbekistan, joking that his former teammate “put on some perfume, fixed his hair and is already at the World Cup, while I’m here in the trenches.”

Gattuso concluded by stressing that Italy must maintain focus and unity in a challenging period: “It’s not an easy moment, but our responsibility is clear, we have to do everything we can to secure qualification and honour the shirt.”
