Malta’s top trotting talents are set to shine on the international stage this weekend at Sicily’s Ippodromo del Mediterraneo in Siracusa. Over December 7th and 8th, the Mediterranean racetrack will host its prestigious International Meeting, with Maltese drivers, owners, and horses making their presence felt across multiple championship events.
Young Star Nelson Azzopardi Leads the Charge
The spotlight on December 8th will be on 20-year-old Nelson Azzopardi as he represents Malta in the Apprentices Championship of the European Union of Trotting (UET). Azzopardi, selected by the Malta Racing Club, aims to defend the title that Jean Claude Pace clinched on home soil in 2023. Competing against 13 drivers from across Europe, Azzopardi will take part in four races as he looks to showcase the skills that have already earned him 12 career wins since his debut in 2019.
Noel Baldacchino Takes on Mediterranean’s Best
December 7th will see Malta’s seasoned driver Noel Baldacchino in action in the final leg of the Mediterranean Horseracing Union’s Championship for drivers. Baldacchino, a veteran with multiple international appearances, will look to secure Malta’s lead in the championship standings. Malta currently sits atop the table with 30 points, ahead of Serbia (24 points) and France (14 points).
The Mediterranean Championship has already featured strong performances by Maltese drivers, with Michael Ellul, Anthony Demanuele, and Charles Camilleri contributing crucial points in earlier legs. Baldacchino’s experience and determination will be pivotal as he aims to clinch the title for Malta.
Maltese Horses Set for Islands Championship Showdown
Adding to the excitement, Maltese owners and their horses will compete in the Islands Championship, an annual highlight of the Mediterranean Horseracing Union. Four horses will represent Malta this year:
