Birkirkara, the reigning champions of the Assikura Women’s League, have capitalised on an opportunity to lead the standings after Hibernians’ unbeaten streak was halted by a 3-0 loss to Mġarr United.
Previously at the top, Hibs have now slipped to second place with 20 points, falling two goals behind the leaders, Birkirkara.
This pivotal victory not only narrows Mġarr’s gap to the top, now just four points adrift, but also represents their first triumph over a Top Four team this season—a noteworthy achievement for the squad. Elsewhere, Swieqi United also claimed victory, raising their points to 19 and maintaining their third-place position.
Mġarr netted twice in the first half against Hibernians through Colombian sisters, Alejandra and Valeria Villegas.
In the second half, Mġarr secured a third goal courtesy of Argentine defender Yanina Mendez.
Towards the end of the match, Hibernians faced further challenges as defender Amber Galea was dismissed from play.
Birkirkara overwhelmed Lija with a 13-goal triumph, ascending to the top of the table with 22 points.
Erica Bispo, who joined the team this summer, impressively netted four goals. Forward Francesca Chircop achieved a hat-trick, and captain Alishia Cassar added two more to the tally.
American player Calista Schechinger also found the back of the net, alongside Charlene Zammit and Martina Fenech, marking her inaugural goal in this women’s league. A further score came from an own goal by Corine Deguara.
