On Thursday, 21st November, at the Mosta Basilica, the final farewell was given to renowned sports journalist Mario Meli, who passed away on Monday 18th November, at the age of 84.
During the funeral service, Fr. Bastjan Camilleri reflected on Mario Meli’s immense contributions to sports journalism over a career that spanned 53 years. Fr. Camilleri remarked how impossible it was to mention Mario Meli’s name without associating it with the world of sports, a realm where he left an indelible mark. Mario Meli retired from broadcasting in 2015, but his legacy continued to inspire many in the field.
Fr. Camilleri noted that Mario was a constant presence at football grounds, where he passionately followed the sport he loved. He also shared how Mario would often feel saddened when he witnessed a lack of unity in the sporting world. However, he comforted the mourners by saying that Mario is now enjoying the unity and harmony found in heaven.
Hundreds of people from various walks of life attended the funeral, with a significant presence from the sports community. Among them was Fr. Hilary Tagliaferro, a prominent figure in Maltese sports and a former colleague of Mario Meli in sports journalism. Fr. Tagliaferro celebrated the Mass, paying tribute to the life and work of his long-time collaborator.
Several political figures, including the Leader of the Opposition and the Nationalist Party, Dr Bernard Grech, came to pay their respects to the man who dedicated his life to sports and its promotion in Malta.
Mario Meli’s passing marks the end of an era in Maltese sports journalism, but his dedication and passion will continue to serve as a guiding light for future generations.
