Thomas Sammut and Sasha Gatt win December’s Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award

Thomas Sammut (darts) and Sasha Gatt (swimming) have been named the winners of December’s Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award.

Fifteen-year-old Thomas Sammut showcased exceptional consistency by winning the youth ranking tournament the Malta Darts Association organised. Sammut emerged victorious in all his matches, securing the title for the second consecutive month, having previously triumphed in November.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Maltese swimmer Sasha Gatt made waves at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Gatt set a new national record in the 800m freestyle, completing the event in 8 minutes, 35.15 seconds and finishing sixth in her heat. This outstanding performance earned her 795 FINA points—the highest ever achieved by a Maltese swimmer.

The awards were presented by Matthew von Brockdorff, Managing Director and CEO of Atlas Insurance, alongside Stephen Azzopardi, Administrator of the Malta Sports Journalists Association. Additionally, chess player Jack Mizzi received his trophy for being one of October 2024’s winners.

This prestigious award is a collaborative effort between the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Atlas Insurance. Each month, the adjudicating panel evaluates young athletes’ national and international accomplishments, while local sports associations and federations are encouraged to nominate outstanding under-21 athletes for consideration. All monthly winners are eligible for the annual award.
