EXCLUSIVE: Jean Claude Micallef emerges as potential new face in race for MOC Secretary General

All indications suggest that Jean Claude Micallef could emerge as the new face in the upcoming election for Secretary General of the Maltese Olympic Committee, in what is shaping up to be one of the most closely followed administrative contests within Maltese sport.

Information obtained exclusively by Malta Sport reveals that a number of national associations have encouraged Micallef to put his name forward, in the hope of ushering in a strong revamp within the Maltese Olympic Committee through what many are describing as a dynamic figure capable of bringing fresh energy, innovation and effective communication to the role. Nominations for the post are set to close this Sunday, 22 February.

Sources close to several federations told Malta Sport that discussions have intensified over the past days, with a growing consensus emerging that the organisation is in need of renewed strategic direction and stronger engagement with its affiliated associations. Micallef is being viewed by some within the sporting community as a potential catalyst for change, particularly given his background in governance, communication and sports administration.

Micallef is no stranger to the Maltese sporting landscape. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport and has also been involved in various roles linked to sports governance and administration. His tenure within the integrity authority and his wider involvement in sport have given him exposure to key issues affecting federations and athletes, including governance structures, communication strategies and integrity frameworks.

He also held high level discussions with the Maltese Olympic Committee in the past in his capacity as a sports administrator, focusing on matters such as athlete education, anti doping and strengthening collaboration between sporting entities and governing bodies.

As anticipated previously by Malta Sport, two other well known figures in Maltese sport have already submitted their nominations for the post of Secretary General. Sue Mercieca confirmed her intention to contest the role earlier this week, while long serving sports administrator Joe Cassar has also submitted his bid.

Cassar remains one of the most experienced figures within Maltese Olympic structures, having served for decades in senior administrative roles within the Maltese Olympic Committee and playing a central part in its operations and international representation. He has occupied the position of Secretary General for many years, having first assumed the role in the early 1990s and continuing to play a key role in the committee’s executive leadership.

However, his long tenure has not been without controversy. In the past, he was linked to an international ticketing controversy involving Olympic Games allocations, with an IOC ethics commission noting that his actions at the time had contributed to reputational concerns surrounding the Olympic movement.

Meanwhile, Mercieca’s entry into the race is understood to have been well received within several administrative circles, with her experience in sports governance and organisational management placing her among the leading contenders in what could now develop into a three way contest should Micallef formally submit his nomination before Sunday’s deadline.

The coming days are expected to be decisive, with various associations continuing internal discussions before declaring their support. Should Micallef confirm his candidature, the election for Secretary General of the Maltese Olympic Committee is set to become one of the most competitive in recent years, with stakeholders across Maltese sport closely monitoring developments.

Malta Sport will continue to follow this story closely in the days leading up to the closing of nominations on Sunday and provide further updates as more information becomes available.
