President Donald Trump has made himself head of a special White House group helping to organise the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. LA28 chairman Casey Wasserman says the move proves how serious the government is about supporting the Games.
Wasserman admitted it’s unusual for a president to take on the role but said it shows the importance of the Olympics to Trump and the federal government. He pointed out that Vice President Al Gore did something similar for the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Trump said the task force will help make sure the Games in Los Angeles are “safe, smooth, and successful.” The group will deal with things like security, transport, and visas, and will work with 36 federal agencies.
The Los Angeles Times criticised Trump’s involvement, even suggesting the city should cancel the Games, partly because of his administration’s strict immigration policies.
Despite the backlash, Wasserman said Trump and his administration have been very supportive and involved, and that’s exactly what the organisers need.
Trump has been active in sports-related events during his second term, including starting a task force for the 2026 World Cup and attending major sporting events like the Super Bowl and the FIFA Club World Cup.
