Helmut Marko, an advisor to Red Bull, has confirmed that the team spent millions on Sergio Perez’s exit deal. Last week, Red Bull announced that Perez would leave after four seasons, with Liam Lawson replacing him.
It has been a tough year for Perez, who finished eighth in the Formula 1 standings after scoring just 49 points in the final 18 races. His contract, signed in June, had a one-year extension, which made the departure more complicated. However, despite hopes of a turnaround, Perez did not regain his best form, prompting Red Bull to part ways with him.
When asked about the cost of Perez’s exit, Marko said, “Considering the contract, it was an agreement that worked for both sides.” When asked if it involved millions, Marko confirmed, “Yes, we are talking about Formula 1.”
Marko added that Perez did not expect his exit initially, as he hoped to return to his previous form. However, after struggling for consistency, the decision was made that parting ways would be best. This also opened up new opportunities for Red Bull’s future.
