Opening Round
Hamrun S…….2
Marsaxlokk….3
Ħamrun suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the 360 Sports Malta Premier, losing 3-2 to Marsaxlokk at the Tony Bezzina stadium. This loss puts coach Alessandro Zinnari under fire, as the reigning champions are now in seventh position with only 11 points from 10 matches.
Ħamrun, coming off three straight losses, needed a win to recover. Marsaxlokk, after losing their first five matches, were unbeaten in four games.
Despite Ħamrun’s early chances, Marsaxlokk took the lead in the 38th minute through Messias.
Ħamrun equalised in the 54th minute with a Mbong penalty. However, Marsaxlokk quickly regained the lead two minutes later when Messias converted another penalty.
Marsaxlokk extended their lead in the 63rd minute through Quitongo.
Ħamrun reduced the deficit in the 79th minute when substitute Gabriel Vella scored.
In added time, Ħamrun’s goalkeeper Bonello joined the attack for a corner. Marsaxlokk countered, forcing Mattias Ellul to foul Quitongo to prevent a certain goal. Ellul was sent off, leaving Ħamrun with ten men.
The result sees Marsaxlokk draw level with Ħamrun on eleven points.
