Ħamrun Spartans will be looking to return to winning ways when they face Naxxar Lions today in the YoHealth Malta Premier, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 at the Centenary Stadium.
The Spartans come into this encounter following a goalless draw against in-form Gżira United, a result that left them on eight points, two behind joint leaders Gżira United and Floriana. With the title race already taking shape, Ħamrun know that nothing less than three points will suffice if they are to keep pace at the top of the table.
Ħamrun were particularly active on transfer deadline day, bringing in several reinforcements in an effort to strengthen the squad ahead of the decisive phase of the season. The club’s objective remains clear, that to secure a 12th league title and avoid the uncertainty of a play-off. Ognjen Bjelicic returns to the squad after serving a one-match suspension.
Naxxar Lions, meanwhile, arrive full of confidence after an emphatic 5-0 derby victory over Mosta. Under the guidance of former Ħamrun coach Winston Muscat, Naxxar appear to be a far more solid outfit than during the Opening Round. Their focus is now firmly on building momentum and finishing the season strongly, with the aim of steering clear of a relegation play-off.
The last time these two sides faced each other in the Opening Round, Naxxar Lions frustrated the reigning champions, earning a 1-1 draw.
