Ħamrun Spartans have added strength to their midfield with the acquisition of Matías García, a Maltese international born in Argentina, as the club continues to prepare for its upcoming UEFA Champions League qualifiers. The 28-year-old joins the Premier League champions following his departure from Floriana, where he spent the past six seasons. The transfer was first revealed by Malta Sport, highlighting the Spartans’ intent to reinforce their squad with experienced local talent.

García, a tireless presence in midfield, becomes one of the first major additions to coach Giacomo Modica’s squad during pre-season. Ħamrun had been in search of a dynamic midfielder to bolster their central options, and García’s experience in Maltese football made him an ideal candidate. His contract with Floriana expired earlier this summer, paving the way for a swift move to the champions.
On Sunday evening, García officially bid farewell to Floriana with a heartfelt message on social media, expressing gratitude for his time at the club. “It’s difficult to describe what I’m feeling, but above all, I want to say thank you,” he wrote. “Floriana was my home for six unforgettable years. We lifted trophies, shared memories, and formed bonds I’ll always carry with me.”
In response, Floriana publicly thanked García for his commitment and professionalism, wishing him the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.
The midfielder won the Maltese Premier League title in 2019–20 and the FA Trophy in 2021–22 during his spell with the Greens. His consistent performances also earned him Maltese citizenship, and he made his debut for the national team in a friendly against Venezuela in 2022.
García is expected to join the Ħamrun squad on Monday as the team departs for a two-week training camp in Italy. The club is entering the final phase of its pre-season preparations ahead of the Champions League qualifiers, with the draw set to take place on Tuesday. President Joseph Portelli, CEO Marcel Bonnici, and technical advisor Eric Saliba are due to travel to Switzerland for the event.
Having first arrived in Malta in 2017 to play for Senglea Athletic, García made his name during his time with Floriana, becoming one of the most reliable midfielders in the division. With his work ethic, leadership qualities, and international experience, he now brings added depth to a Ħamrun side aiming for both domestic and European success in the coming season.
