Floriana FC have officially announced the appointment of Augusto Daniel Portela La Silva as their new head coach ahead of the 2025/26 season. The Portuguese tactician arrives with a wealth of international experience, having coached in Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and the United Arab Emirates.
The 57-year-old manager, widely known as Daniel Portela, has held several key positions throughout his coaching career, including stints at Boavista FC, CD Fátima, SC Salgueiros, Al-Nasr SC (Dubai), and Bravos do Maquis. His most recent role was with Al-Mesaimeer SC in Qatar, where he served as head coach until 2023.
Portela has also worked extensively as a youth and assistant coach, contributing to the development of teams at various levels. Notably, he spent two seasons managing Boavista’s youth teams and previously served as an assistant coach at Desportivo Aves, where he was part of the technical staff during a competitive campaign in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.
According to football data website Transfermarkt, Portela holds a UEFA Pro Licence and has earned recognition for his tactical discipline and flexibility. He is known for implementing structured yet attacking styles of play and has often been praised for his ability to adapt to different football cultures and environments.
Floriana, one of the most decorated clubs in Maltese football history, are aiming to revitalise their squad and technical approach under Portela’s leadership as they prepare for both domestic and potential European commitments.
The appointment signals a clear intent from the Greens’ hierarchy to invest in experience and modern coaching philosophies in a bid to reclaim top honours. With the 2025/26 season on the horizon, supporters will be eager to see how Portela’s continental know-how translates into results in Europe and Malta.
