YoHealth Malta Premier 25/26 – MD13 – Top 6
Floriana……..2
Birkirkara…..0
Floriana recorded a 2-0 victory over Birkirkara at the National Stadium to move four points clear at the top of the YoHealth Malta Premier League. The result strengthened Floriana position in the title race while Birkirkara lost ground in the Top Six standings.
Floriana took control of the match from the opening stages and did not allow Birkirkara to establish any sustained rhythm. The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute when Francisco Teixeira was fouled inside the penalty area by Leandro Lacunza. Referee Slobodan Petrovic awarded a penalty and confirmed the decision after consulting the Football Video Support system. Jonny Grech converted the spot kick to give Floriana the lead.
Birkirkara struggled to respond and created limited attacking opportunities during the first half. Floriana doubled their advantage on 34 minutes when Federico Varela released Mattia Veselji down the flank. Veselji attempted a cross that was deflected by Stjepan Marjanovic into his own goal.
Floriana continued to apply pressure before the break and nearly added a third goal when Kouya Mabea struck a powerful effort that was saved by Birkirkara goalkeeper Matthew Grech.
At half time, Birkirkara coach Gianluca Festa introduced Jan Busuttil and Marcos Maydana in an attempt to increase attacking momentum. The Stripes showed greater urgency after the restart and created chances, including an effort by Manuel Morello that was blocked by Floriana goalkeeper Gabriele Cioletti.
Floriana remained composed and continued to threaten on the counter attack. Teixeira sent a curling shot narrowly wide, while Cioletti produced a key save on 60 minutes to deny Busuttil header from close range.
In the closing stages, Floriana introduced Carlo Zammit Lonardelli, who returned to action after a lengthy injury absence. Birkirkara continued to push forward and Maydana struck a free kick over the crossbar ten minutes from time, but Floriana saw out the match without further incident.
The win leaves Floriana four points clear at the top of the YoHealth Malta Premier League, while Birkirkara remain nine points behind second placed Hamrun Spartans in the Top Six phase.
