Darren Abdilla named Coach of the Month for February

Floriana Head Coach Darren Abdilla has been recognised as the Coach of the Month for February, following an impressive unbeaten run with his team.

Floriana stood out as the only undefeated side among all 12 clubs in the Maltese Premier League during the month, securing three crucial victories against Żabbar, Marsaxlokk, and Sliema Wanderers, along with a goalless draw against Balzan. Abdilla’s tactical acumen and leadership played a pivotal role in maintaining the team’s consistency and defensive solidity.

Out of 25 votes cast, Abdilla received eight, securing the award for the second time this season, having previously won in November. Despite strong competition from Naxxar’s George Vella and Marsaxlokk’s Enzo Potenza, Abdilla’s achievements with Floriana saw him clinch the honour.

Born on 10th July 1979, Abdilla is 45 years old and holds a UEFA Pro Licence. Throughout his career, he has managed 336 matches as a first-team coach, including 196 in the Maltese Premier League. He led Valletta to a Super Cup victory in 2019 and guided Gżira United to the First Division championship in the 2015/16 season.

Abdilla holds a record in Malta for qualifying to the next round in European competitions on eight occasions, six times with Gżira United and once each with Floriana and Valletta. He has coached 30 matches in UEFA competitions, with 20 at Gżira United, six at Valletta, and four at Floriana, sharing the record for the most European club competition games managed by a coach in Malta alongside Mark Miller. Additionally, he remains the only coach in Malta to guide a team through two consecutive rounds twice in a row, in 2022 and 2023, both with Gżira United in the UEFA Conference League.

Before taking charge of Floriana, Valletta, and Gżira United, Abdilla began his managerial career with Birżebbuġa St Peter’s and Għaxaq in the lower divisions between 2007 and 2012. His continued success and ability to extract top performances from his squad reinforce his reputation as one of the most accomplished coaches in Maltese football. His latest accolade is a testament to the consistency and tactical discipline that he instils in his teams, as Floriana remain a formidable force in the league.
