Wolverhampton Wanderers defeat Aston Villa to secure second Premier League win

Wolverhampton Wanderers recorded their second win of the Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Molineux. The result ensured Wolves avoided equalling the lowest points total in top flight history and placed pressure on Villa in the race for a top four finish.

Aston Villa began strongly despite heavy rain, seeking only a second league win in nine visits to Molineux. Douglas Luiz tested Jose Sa with a volley, while Morgan Rogers also forced a save. At the other end, Toti Gomes struck wide as both sides created limited clear chances. Wolves entered half time having failed to score in nine consecutive league matches.

The home side improved after the interval and took the lead in the 60th minute. Jackson Tchatchoua delivered a cross that Adam Armstrong miscontrolled, allowing Joao Gomes to strike from close range, with the ball hitting the underside of the bar before crossing the line.

Villa pushed for an equaliser, with Ian Maatsen shooting directly at Sa from short distance. Tammy Abraham later saw an effort cleared off the line by Yerson Mosquera. Wolves maintained their defensive shape while continuing to search for a second goal.

In the final moments, Wolves extended their lead on the counter attack. Rodrigo Gomes received the ball centrally and finished from inside the area to seal the win.

The victory reduces Wolves’ gap to safety to 14 points, although their relegation rivals have games in hand. Villa remain in contention for a Champions League place but face upcoming fixtures against and Chelsea that could influence their league position.
