Speaking ahead of tonight’s match against Ħamrun, Shakhtar coach Arda Turan underlined the importance of the clash with Ħamrun Spartans, saying the result could shape the club’s upcoming objectives. He spoke with considerable respect for the Maltese side, noting their international mix, strong performances in Europe, and solid playing structure. Turan rejected the notion that Shakhtar are clear favourites, emphasising the difficulty of playing in Malta and the quality of their opponents. “Favourites or budgets do not win matches before they are played,” he insisted.
He highlighted Ħamrun’s strengths in passing, dribbling, and build-up play, as well as the threat posed by their full-backs and forwards. Turan warned that they can create danger in several ways and said the atmosphere and pitch conditions could also influence the match. “If a team can pass and dribble well, they can create threats by any means,” he said.
Turan confirmed that only Marlon Santos and Alisson Santana are unavailable for selection. He added that a win would give Shakhtar a crucial advantage amid a demanding schedule, reducing travel fatigue and allowing more time for training. He concluded by praising Ħamrun’s progression, saying their level is fully consistent with Conference League standards and that their success does not surprise him.
