Luis Díaz double inspires Bayern to victory over PSG

Luis Díaz scored twice before being sent off as Bayern Munich beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League, making a strong statement while also stopping the French side from achieving their longest-ever winning run in the competition.

Bayern took only four minutes to strike, with Díaz squeezing his shot past Marquinhos after Michael Olise’s effort had been saved. PSG then struggled to find their rhythm, and although Fabián Ruiz set up Ousmane Dembélé to chest the ball into the net midway through the first half, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Things got worse for PSG when Dembélé was forced off injured just minutes later, and Barcola missed a one-on-one chance against Manuel Neuer soon after. Bayern were unlucky not to double their lead when Serge Gnabry hit both posts, but Díaz made sure moments later, robbing Marquinhos and firing in off the upright to make it 2-0. The visitors had further warning signs as Josip Stanišić had a goal disallowed and Joshua Kimmich went close. However, Díaz spoiled his fine first half when he was sent off just before the break for a reckless tackle on Achraf Hakimi, who was forced off injured.

Bayern slowed the game down after the restart, with Neuer booked early for time-wasting. PSG pushed forward, but Bradley Barcola failed to make the most of a good chance, and Vitinha saw two efforts saved. The home side finally pulled one back in the 74th minute, when João Neves finished neatly from Lee Kang-in’s cross.

PSG piled on the pressure late on, but Neuer stayed firm, denying Warren Zaïre-Emery with a fine save, while Jonathan Tah made key blocks to protect Bayern’s lead. The win means Bayern keep their perfect record this season, now 16 victories in all competitions, while ending PSG’s eight-match unbeaten run.
