Cristian Chivu made history by becoming the first Inter manager ever to win the opening three games of a single Champions League season without conceding a goal. His side’s latest triumph was orchestrated by Francesco Pio Esposito, who scored and provided an assist, while Martínez once again found the net to extend his remarkable scoring streak.
The Belgian hosts almost shocked the visitors early on. Promise David forced Yann Sommer into a smart save inside the opening three minutes, and from the resulting corner, Christian Burgess’s shot was dramatically cleared off the line by Martínez himself.
Inter took control midway through the first half. Hakan Calhanoglu’s powerful strike was well saved by Kjell Scherpen, but the breakthrough arrived soon after when a Calhanoglu corner caused chaos in the area and Denzel Dumfries reacted quickest to smash home.
Just before the break, the Nerazzurri doubled their lead through a fluid attacking move. Dumfries surged down the right, found Esposito, who teed up Martínez, and the Argentine curled in a precise finish to make it 2-0 before halftime.
Any hopes of a Union revival vanished five minutes into the second half when VAR spotted a handball by Kamiel Van de Perre. Calhanoglu converted the resulting penalty with typical composure, sending Scherpen the wrong way.
Inter then capped their dominant performance in the 76th minute. A swift counterattack saw Ange Yoan Bonny burst into the box and square for Esposito, who calmly slotted home to seal a comprehensive 4-0 win.
The result maintains Inter’s 100 per cent record in the competition and marks their seventh consecutive victory across all competitions. For Union Saint-Gilloise, it was another harsh lesson in top-level European football, with just one win from their first three matches.
The night also carried special significance for Lautaro Martínez, who has become Europe’s most prolific scorer in 2025. The Argentine has netted 11 goals in the Champions League this calendar year more than any other player on the continent.
This season alone, Martínez has already scored three times in two appearances, including a double against Slavia Prague and his latest strike against Union, having been rested against Ajax. His tally builds on an extraordinary run that began in January 2025, when he scored against Sparta Prague, followed by three against Monaco, one versus Feyenoord, two against Bayern Munich, and another against Barcelona.
Although he remained on the bench against Feyenoord and did not score in last season’s final against Paris Saint-Germain, Martínez’s consistency and leadership have been vital to Inter’s resurgence under Chivu.
With Inter cruising through their Champions League group and Martínez in unstoppable form, the Nerazzurri look every inch a contender for European glory once again
