Jude Bellingham scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Real Madrid came from behind twice to secure a 3-2 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout round play-off. The win marked the Spanish side’s first-ever triumph at the Etihad Stadium inside 90 minutes and handed them a crucial advantage heading into the second leg.
The build-up to the match was charged, with Manchester City fans unfurling a banner aimed at Vinícius Júnior, referencing his previous complaints about officiating. The Brazilian was at the heart of the early action, first having a penalty appeal ruled out for offside and then setting up Kylian Mbappé, whose shot was saved before Ferland Mendy was denied by Nathan Aké.
Despite Madrid’s early pressure, City took the lead with a well-crafted move, as Josko Gvardiol chested the ball into the path of Erling Haaland, who netted his first-ever goal against Los Blancos. The hosts continued to press, with Phil Foden—on for the injured Jack Grealish—forcing a save from Thibaut Courtois, while Manuel Akanji’s header clipped the crossbar. At the other end, Federico Valverde came close, and Mbappé squandered a chance just before half-time.
City started the second half with intent, Haaland’s effort being deflected onto the crossbar by Eduardo Camavinga. Madrid responded, with Vinícius gliding past Rico Lewis to deliver a cross that Bellingham headed wide, before Ederson twice denied Mbappé. The French forward finally found the net just after the hour mark, capitalising on Dani Ceballos’ lofted pass to equalise despite an awkward connection on the ball.
Moments later, City were awarded a penalty after Ceballos fouled Foden. Haaland stepped up and sent Courtois the wrong way to restore the home side’s advantage. However, Madrid hit back almost immediately, as Brahim Díaz—just two minutes after coming on—slotted home following Ederson’s parry from a Vinícius shot.
The late drama continued, with Madrid seizing the initiative in stoppage time. Vinícius exploited City’s defensive hesitation, poking the ball forward for Bellingham, who reacted quickly to turn it into the net and secure a stunning victory for the visitors.
The result extends Madrid’s winning run in the Champions League to four matches, while City have now won just one of their last six European fixtures. Pep Guardiola’s side will need a response in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu if they are to keep their title defence alive.
