Luciano Spalletti has called on Juventus to show their identity and ambition as they prepare for a difficult trip to the Stadio Franchi to face Paolo Vanoli’s new-look Fiorentina. Speaking on the eve of the match, the Juventus coach said he had seen “something new” in training and insisted his squad “have everything needed to perform well”.
After disappointing home draws against Sporting and Torino and a two-week pause for international fixtures, Spalletti said he found his returning players attentive and motivated. “We worked with the few players who were here, focusing on details that matter. In group sessions I saw something new; they paid attention, which shows their willingness.”
Spalletti acknowledged the challenge Fiorentina will pose, stressing that the mentality of the entire squad will decide the match.
“We must prove on the pitch that we are Juventus. I expect a great performance because Fiorentina will give everything: the team, the stadium, the city. It will be very difficult, but I expect us to show who we are.”
When asked about Juventus’s lack of goals, Spalletti said the team needed to build stable foundations rather than constantly change details.
“We always look at numbers, but the real work is creating our own stability and building a base on which to grow. I found what I had expected from the players; we have almost everything needed.”
On the signs of growth, he expects: “It’s about behaviour as a unit in different match situations. That’s the difficult part.” Spalletti praised Teun Koopmeiners’ versatility, saying great players adapt to any position.
“He showed quality in the last three matches. He can also play where Gasperini used him at Atalanta, even if I didn’t expect him to be so effective there. Now that we have recovered strong defenders like Kelly and Cabal, he could even be moved into midfield.”
Returning to Florence as Juventus coach brings no added weight for Spalletti: “I’ve been to Florence many times; I have no moral debts with anyone. I accept whatever the environment brings and will give my best.” He confirmed that a switch to a four-man defence remains possible, though more training time and defensive depth are needed.
Spalletti highlighted the group’s character: “Human quality always makes the difference. You must know how to stay together and share the same passion.” On Kenan Yıldız, he said: “He can break schemes, but we have others who can too. He behaves like a real player within the team and has leadership qualities.”
Spalletti expressed strong backing for the Azzurri ahead of their crucial World Cup play-off. “It’s clear the national team’s issues don’t depend on one coach. We must support the players and the CT. From Juventus’ side, we will help in any way needed if it assists Italy in reaching the World Cup. I am totally at the disposal of the national team. I’m convinced Italy will qualify.”
