In Bergamo, the rescheduled 19th-round Serie A clash between Gasperini’s Atalanta and Thiago Motta’s Juventus ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw, leaving both sides frustrated in their pursuit of better league positions. The game played at the Gewiss Stadium, saw a cagey first half with little rhythm and no goals, thanks to the stellar performances of goalkeepers Di Gregorio and Carnesecchi, as well as some wasteful finishing.
The match came to life in the second half, with spaces opening up and both teams attacking with more urgency. Kalulu struck the post with a header before breaking the deadlock with a left-footed finish, set up by McKennie. However, substitute Retegui salvaged a point for Atalanta, heading home a late equaliser after outpacing Savona in the box.
The result sees Atalanta reach 43 points, while Juventus languish on 34, with 13 draws to their name.
Missing Kossounou due to injury and with Retegui only fit enough for the bench, Gasperini fielded Scalvini in defence, with De Ketelaere and Lookman leading the line and Pasalic providing support. Juventus, without Conceição and Vlahović, deployed Cambiaso at left-back, Locatelli and Thuram in midfield, and McKennie as a false nine, supported by Yildiz, Koopmeiners, and Nico González.
Atalanta started strongly, dominating possession and pressing high. However, their build-up play lacked speed, and they struggled to break through Juventus’s compact defence. Di Gregorio comfortably saved a weak shot from Lookman, while De Ketelaere headed wide. Juventus attempted to respond by raising their intensity, with Koopmeiners missing the target from a promising position and Carnesecchi denying McKennie.
As the half progressed, both teams traded chances. Di Gregorio made an excellent save to deny Lookman after a Juventus defensive error, while Thuram blocked a shot from Pasalic. Just before the break, Carnesecchi dealt with a dangerous Cambiaso cross, and Yildiz’s acrobatic attempt went wide.
The second half began with greater urgency. Juventus pressed higher up the pitch and committed more players forward. Kalulu came close, hitting the post with a header, before scoring with a clinical finish from McKennie’s pass. The goal shifted the momentum, prompting Gasperini to bring on Samardzic for the ineffective Pasalic.
Atalanta upped the tempo, with Ederson and Samardzic both going close, but Juventus remained dangerous on the counter. Carnesecchi pulled off a superb save to deny McKennie, while Ederson’s long-range effort narrowly missed the target.
The match became end-to-end as both sides made further substitutions. Retegui, introduced for De Ketelaere, made an instant impact, heading in a precise cross to level the score. The closing stages saw frantic action, with Carnesecchi denying Locatelli, Di Gregorio saving from Zaniolo, and Yildiz missing the target by inches.
Ultimately, the match ended with applause for the entertainment provided, but the shared point does little for either side’s ambitions. Both managers will feel their teams missed an opportunity to gain ground in the standings.
