Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, has opened up about the club’s January transfer window, shedding light on the unexpected departure of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the challenges in securing replacements. Speaking during a press conference at the Konami Training Center, Manna detailed the complex negotiations and plans for the Serie A side.
Kvaratskhelia departure: “We were almost blackmailed”
Manna described the circumstances surrounding Kvaratskhelia’s move, admitting the club faced significant pressure. “We want to thank Kvara for what he has done over the years,” Manna said. “We tried to resolve a complicated situation. We weren’t exactly blackmailed, but it was close. We were forced to sell him in January, and replacing a top player mid-season is difficult, especially given our wage constraints.”
Failed moves for Danilo and Comuzzo
Napoli had agreed terms with Brazilian defender Danilo, but the transfer fell through. “I know Danilo personally, and we had an agreement in place. Everything was settled, but he made a life choice and didn’t join us,” Manna explained.
He also commented on the club’s interest in Fiorentina’s young defender Comuzzo, saying: “We intended to sign him for the future, which would have allowed Rafa Marin to gain experience elsewhere.”
Market Evaluation: High expectations from fans
Reflecting on the club’s January dealings, Manna acknowledged the high expectations from Napoli fans. “We’ve set high standards, but we must remain realistic. The market didn’t end yesterday, and Napoli’s future isn’t tied to one window. We will continue to invest responsibly,” he added, stressing that the club won’t make hasty decisions to satisfy short-term demands.
Replacement for Kvaratskhelia: Garnacho and Adeyemi talks
Manna revealed that Napoli came close to signing Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United. “We were near the fee United wanted, but his wage demands didn’t align with our structure.” Negotiations with Karim Adeyemi also stalled. “We had an initial agreement with Dortmund, but the player wasn’t ready to move, and we didn’t push further,” he said.
Saint-Maximin was another missed target due to “bureaucratic issues,” with Manna admitting delays cost them valuable time.
Noah Okafor’s arrival
Napoli secured the signing of Swiss forward Noah Okafor from Milan. “There were no issues with his medical. He’s slightly behind in terms of fitness but will be ready soon,” Manna concluded.
Despite the challenges, Napoli remains focused on long-term squad growth and responsible investments, with Kvaratskhelia’s transfer funds set to bolster the team in upcoming windows.
