The Football Federation of Russia has voted against the country’s move to the Asian Football Confederation. “We were unanimously against because there are no guarantees from FIFA. We have decided to continue contacts with UEFA, especially since there is progress in the discussions,” said committee member Mikhail Gerskovich, as reported by the RIA news agency and cited by Reuters.
The president of the country’s Football Federation, Aleksandr Dyukov, had stated at the end of the previous year that they were considering joining the Asian Football Confederation, especially after FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia from international competitions due to the war in Ukraine.
Since the suspension, Russia has been playing only friendly matches, and there were recent indications that the younger national teams of the country might return to UEFA competitions.
In September, the European football governing body stated that “children should not be punished for actions for which only adults are responsible,” but later abandoned the plan to reintegrate Russian teams under 17 into European competitions.
