Naxxar Lions produced a commanding performance to secure a convincing victory over neighbouring rivals Mosta, earning valuable points following a disappointing opening round and strengthening their position in the top flight.
The Lions controlled the match from the opening whistle and showed early intent. Vinicius narrowly missed the target inside the first 11 minutes before Louis Pahama attempted an overhead kick that also failed to trouble the goalkeeper.
The breakthrough arrived on 26 minutes when Joao Victor found the net with a composed finish past Mosta goalkeeper David Akpan. Naxxar extended their advantage just two minutes later as Vinicius struck a powerful effort that left Akpan with no chance.
Naxxar continued to dictate proceedings and effectively settled the contest before half time. On 42 minutes, Joao Victor rose highest to head home his second goal of the match, giving the Lions a three goal cushion at the interval.
Mosta struggled to respond after the restart and Naxxar maintained their intensity. Substitute Gabriel Goncalves added a fourth goal on 66 minutes with a close range header, further underlining the Lions’ dominance.
The scoring was completed on 72 minutes when Pahama finished from close range to cap a comprehensive team performance and secure a significant derby victory for Naxxar Lions.
