Manchester United end Arsenal home run with comeback victory

Manchester United came from behind to defeat Arsenal in a five goal Premier League contest at the Emirates Stadium, completing a notable double over title contenders and handing the Gunners their first home league defeat of the season.

Fresh from an impressive victory over Manchester City, United faced a stern test against an Arsenal side in strong domestic form. The hosts began with authority and controlled possession in the opening stages, although clear chances were limited. Leandro Trossard fired off target early on before Arsenal came closer when Martín Zubimendi rose to meet Declan Rice’s delivery, only for Senne Lammens to produce a sharp save.

Arsenal’s pressure eventually told, albeit in fortunate circumstances. A partial clearance from Patrick Dorgu fell to Martin Ødegaard, whose effort deflected off Lisandro Martínez and found the net to give the hosts the lead. Despite Arsenal’s dominance, United were handed a way back into the match following a costly error. Zubimendi’s loose pass sent Bryan Mbeumo through on goal and the forward calmly rounded David Raya before finishing into an empty net.

The equaliser shifted the momentum and United capitalised early in the second half. Dorgu, who has been deployed in a wide midfield role in recent weeks, combined neatly with Bruno Fernandes before unleashing a powerful strike from distance that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. The goal stunned the home crowd and prompted a quadruple substitution from Mikel Arteta, although Arsenal struggled to regain control.

United appeared comfortable as the match moved into the closing stages, but Arsenal found a late lifeline six minutes from time. Bukayo Saka’s inswinging corner caused confusion in the area and Mikel Merino was quickest to react, turning the ball home from close range.

Any hopes of a comeback were short lived. United responded almost immediately when Matheus Cunha produced a precise curling effort from outside the penalty area to restore their two goal advantage. The strike secured United’s first league win at the Emirates since 2017 and brought an end to Arsenal’s seventeen match unbeaten home run in the Premier League.
