The summer transfer of Maltese international Trent Buhagiar from Australia’s Newcastle United Jets in the A-League to Brescia in Italy’s Serie B has so far been anything but successful. Despite the initial promise of the move, the winger has struggled to secure playing time under the club’s management.
From the outset, Buhagiar found himself on the fringes of the squad under coach Rolando Maran. Since signing with Brescia, he has played just 14 minutes across two matches. Maran’s dismissal in early December further complicated matters for the 27-year-old, as his successor, Pierpaolo Bisoli, has also overlooked the player, leaving him without any game time under the new regime.
According to reports from Brescia-based sports outlets, the club is actively seeking to offload several players this month, with Buhagiar among those likely to be shown the door. While there is no official word yet on his immediate future, Italian journalists suggest that a loan move within Italy—possibly to a Lega Pro club—might be on the cards. Such a move could provide Buhagiar with the chance to play regular football and rebuild his confidence.
A return to Malta has also been speculated, with some clubs reportedly considering the possibility of a short-term loan deal. However, the high wages commanded by the former Australia U-23 international make this option challenging. Buhagiar’s salary significantly exceeds the average for foreign players of his calibre in Malta, posing a financial hurdle for potential suitors.
As of now, no clubs have formally expressed interest, leaving Buhagiar’s future uncertain. A loan move within Italy appears to be the most viable solution for both the player and Brescia, allowing him the opportunity to prove his worth and get his career back on track. For now, all eyes will be on Brescia as they navigate the January transfer window and decide the fate of their underutilised winger.
