Gżira United’s defender Gabriel Bohrer Mentz has officially obtained Maltese citizenship, making him eligible to join the Malta national team for future international matches, as announced by the Premier League club.
The Brazilian player has been living and playing in Malta for the last five years, which qualified him to apply for Maltese citizenship.
Mentz joins a list of international players in the Premier League who have received Maltese passports over the years.
Fellow Gżira teammates Enrico Pepe and Marcelo Dias, as well as Floriana’s Matias Garcia, are among the naturalized Maltese players.
Since Mentz will be recognized as a home-grown player beginning on January 1, 2025, he will not be eligible to represent Malta in the UEFA Nations League matches against Moldova next month and Andorra in November.
