Fyodor Zammit’s refereeing career hit a remarkable milestone when he officiated his 200th match in the Maltese Premier League. His journey began in September 2010 Qormi vs Vittoriosa Stars FC, when he debuted in the Premier League.
However his passion for football that ignited much earlier in life. He first became involved in the sport as a player with Birzebugia F.C. but he quickly realized that refereeing could offer him more opportunities.
At just 14 years old, Zammit officiated his first match, and by the time he was 25, he had already controlled his first Premier League game. His rapid progression in the sport saw him appointed as a FIFA international referee in 2016, a role he held for five years until 2021. During this period, he was called to officiate major matches, including preliminary rounds of the UEFA Europa League and Champions League, as well as international youth and Under-21 matches. He also controlled notable domestic fixtures such as the Super Cup Final between Hibernians and Floriana in the 2017/18 season, as well as three FA Trophy semi-finals. Last season Zammit officiated the FA Trophy Final between Floriana and Sliema Wanderers F.C.
Zammit’s international refereeing career took him across Europe, where he had the opportunity to oversee matches involving prestigious clubs like Galatasaray and Schalke, as well as national teams, with his highlight being a friendly between Albania and Norway at the Elbasan Stadium.
At 39, Zammit had reached the 200-match milestone, a testament to his dedication and passion for the game. His influence on Maltese football, particularly his ability to handle intense matches, has been significant. His journey as an elite referee continues to inspire, and his career achievements reflect both the rewards and challenges of officiating at the highest levels.
