Intriguing Transfer Twist: Inter Milan Eager to Negotiate Lukaku's Permanent Move

Inter Milan President Steven Zhang has made it clear that he intends to initiate discussions with Chelsea regarding the future of star forward Romelu Lukaku. A year after selling the Belgian international for a substantial fee, Inter capitalized on his discontent at Chelsea and secured his return on loan.

Although the 30-year-old endured a challenging first half of the 2022-23 season, marred by injuries, his fortunes improved after the mid-season break. Romelu made significant contributions, registering 14 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances, despite often coming off the bench, as seen in the recent Champions League final against Manchester City.

Unfortunately, Inter fell short in the final, losing 1-0. Lukaku’s performance, marked by missed opportunities and occasional interference with teammates, left room for improvement. Nevertheless, Simone Inzaghi, Inter’s manager, is keen to retain Lukaku’s services if an agreement can be reached with Chelsea, who have shown willingness to consider offers.

After the high-profile match in Istanbul, Zhang shed light on Inter’s stance, expressing his desire to see Lukaku remain at San Siro. In an interview with the Evening Standard, Zhang stated, “Romelu loves Inter, that’s very clear. He’s a great guy, but he is under contract at Chelsea. We have to wait and speak to Chelsea to make Lukaku’s future clear.”

Lukaku still has three years remaining on his contract with Chelsea, but unless he has a change of heart about his future destination, the chances of a contract renewal seem unlikely. Inter faces financial constraints that prevent them from meeting Chelsea’s expectations for a permanent transfer fee.

Therefore, a new loan arrangement, with Inter covering Lukaku’s wages in full, appears to be the most probable solution. However, Chelsea may use Romelu as part of a proposal for acquiring an Inter player. Goalkeeper Andre Onana has been on Chelsea’s radar, although it remains unclear if Inter would be willing to sacrifice a significant portion of any transfer fee to secure Lukaku’s permanent services in exchange for their prized shot-stopper.

The negotiations between Inter Milan and Chelsea regarding Romelu’s future promise to be a captivating saga, with both clubs seeking the best possible outcome.
