Maltese referees Ezekiel Barbara and Andrea Pavia Schiavone have been selected to participate in the 63rd edition of the UEFA CORE (Centre of Refereeing Excellence) Programme, marking an important milestone for local officiating on the European stage.
The duo was nominated by the MFA Referees Committee and is currently attending the programme’s introductory course at UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. This first phase represents the beginning of a structured development pathway aimed at preparing Europe’s most promising match officials for the highest levels of international football.
The UEFA CORE Programme brings together talented referees from across the continent, offering intensive training that combines technical instruction, physical preparation, match analysis, and practical on-field experience. The initiative is widely regarded as a key stepping stone for officials aspiring to officiate in top-tier European competitions.
