Eder Militão's season ends after ACL tear; Surgery required

A little more than a year has passed since Éder Militão, a defender for Real Madrid, tore the ACL in his left leg.

On Saturday, during a match against Osasuna in La Liga, he ruptured the ACL in his right leg and had to be carried off the field amid screams at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The 26-year-old Brazilian centre-back, streched off with his jersey covering his face, will need surgery according to the club.

Militão had previously missed most of last season after tearing his left ACL in the first game, but he returned in March to help the team win the Champions League and the Spanish league.

The defender has been a key player in Madrid’s two European Cup and three La Liga victories, among other trophies. He plays alongside Antonio Rudiger in the centre of the backline.

In the recent match, coach Carlo Ancelotti substituted Militão with youth player Raúl Asencio. Before Militão’s injury, Madrid and Brazil’s forward Rodgryo was also injured and had ice applied to his left leg before being replaced. Right-back Lucas Vázquez was substituted at halftime due to a leg issue that was visibly affecting his performance.

This is the second ACL injury this season for Madrid’s squad, with Spain’s right-back Dani Carvajal also injuring his right leg last month.

Similar to last season, Madrid has also lost Courtois and Alaba to ACL injuries.
