Diego Simeone will mark a significant milestone this weekend as he takes charge of Atletico Madrid for the 700th time when his side hosts Alaves in La Liga. The Argentine manager, who joined the club in December 2011, has expressed his gratitude for reaching this landmark as speculation about his future continues to circulate.
Over nearly 13 years at the helm, Simeone, 54, has transformed Atletico Madrid from underdogs into one of the most competitive sides in Spanish and European football. Under his leadership, the club has claimed two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, and two Europa League trophies. They have also reached the Champions League final twice, although both ended in defeat to city rivals Real Madrid.
Simeone’s emphasis on defensive solidity has been a hallmark of his tenure, with the team achieving an impressive 326 clean sheets during his time in charge. Speaking ahead of the match against Alaves, the manager reflected on his journey with the club.
“First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who has worked alongside me in the coaching staff, including those who are no longer with us, as well as the players who made it possible for me to remain here for so long,” Simeone said. “I’m also deeply grateful to Miguel Angel (CEO) and Enrique Cerezo (president) for their unwavering support, and, of course, to our fans for the respect they have always shown me. It’s an honour to celebrate these 700 games with Atletico.”
Despite his achievements, Atletico’s form this season has drawn scrutiny. They currently sit third in La Liga, seven points behind leaders Barcelona, after a series of five draws. Additionally, their Champions League campaign has faltered, with the team languishing in 23rd position in the group stage standings halfway through.
Simeone, whose contract runs until June 2027, dismissed speculation about his future. “I’m focused on Alaves and nothing else,” he stated. “The next eight games are crucial, and we’ll approach them one at a time. Alaves are a direct and speedy team, with players we know well from their time here. We need to bring the game to where we can hurt them, playing at a high tempo.”
Atletico Madrid enter the weekend in strong form, having secured four consecutive wins across all competitions before the international break. Simeone remains determined to build on this momentum and continue his remarkable tenure with the club.
