GM nears Formula 1 entry with revived Andretti bid

General Motors (GM) is edging closer to entering Formula 1 as an 11th team in 2026, with its previously rejected bid alongside Andretti Global gaining traction. Multiple sources suggest the landscape has shifted since Formula 1 initially dismissed the proposal in January, citing concerns over competitiveness and value.

In September, Michael Andretti, former F1 driver and son of 1978 champion Mario Andretti, stepped back from daily operations at Andretti Global. Business partner Dan Towriss now leads the project, with Andretti retaining an advisory role.

The change in leadership coincides with Liberty Media’s own transitions, as long-time CEO Greg Maffei is set to step down at the year’s end. Teams appear more receptive, with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff expressing openness, provided GM’s entry contributes positively to the sport.

“If a team can add to the championship, particularly with GM as a team owner, it’s a different story. If it grows the sport’s popularity and revenue, no team would oppose it,” said Wolff.

Ferrari’s Fred Vasseur echoed the sentiment, supporting any addition that enhances the sport’s value both commercially and competitively.

Despite growing support, hurdles remain. Teams argue the current $200 million entry fee, meant to compensate the existing 10 teams, is outdated given Formula 1’s booming valuation, with some teams worth over $1 billion.

Additionally, a GM-backed team would likely rely on engines from another manufacturer until 2028, when Cadillac-branded engines are expected to debut.

Andretti already operates a base in Silverstone, England, with personnel including Pat Symonds, a former F1 chief technical officer, serving as executive engineering consultant.

While the FIA approved Andretti’s application last year, final approval rests with Formula 1. With a new commercial Concorde Agreement and engine regulations set to begin in 2026, an update from Formula 1 is anticipated soon.

No official comments have been made by Formula 1 or Andretti representatives at this time.
