Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s sixth permanent manager since their last Premier League title in 2013, believes he is the right man to bring glory back to Old Trafford. Speaking at his first press conference at Carrington ahead of Sunday’s game against Ipswich Town, the 39-year-old Portuguese coach expressed confidence in his ability to transform the team’s fortunes.
“I’m a bit of a dreamer,” Amorim said. “I believe in myself, in the club, and in the players. You might not think it’s possible, but I do. I want to try new things and make this work.”
Amorim dismissed the notion that managing United is an “impossible job,” despite the high turnover of managers since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. “Call me naive, but I truly believe I’m the right person for this moment. I’m not worried about the past,” he remarked with a smile.
Having only conducted two training sessions due to the international break, Amorim promised subtle but meaningful changes for Sunday’s match. “We lose the ball too often. It’s about improving the small things anddetails that make a difference. That’s where I excel.”
The former Sporting Lisbon coach shared that compatriot and ex-United manager José Mourinho sent him a message of support, calling United “a lovely club with lovely people.” However, Amorim emphasised their differences. “Mourinho was a European champion when he arrived. I’m not. Football has changed, and I think my youth and modern approach make me right for this moment.”
Amorim, known for his charismatic personality and progressive tactics, led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and secured another title last season. United acted swiftly to appoint him after dismissing Erik ten Hag on October 28, with the team in 14th place. Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy steadied the ship with three wins in four games, lifting them to 13th.
“This is the best club in England,” Amorim declared. “We want to win, and I hope to bring something fresh to the players. I believe in building something new here.”
With a blend of optimism, belief, and a proven track record, Amorim hopes to be the dreamer who restores Manchester United’s former glory. Fans now wait eagerly to see if his vision will bring success back to Old Trafford.
